Mount Titlis FAQs
Fares, passes, the 2026 works, time at the top, the Cliff Walk, children and the weather at 3,020 metres. Choosing between Mount Titlis guided tours? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
Three answers matter more than the rest. How long does your fare give you at the summit? In 2026 some tours allow about an hour. Is the cable car in the price? It is on every tour but one private day from Zurich. And who is with you at the top: a guide, or nobody? Every tour card says all three.
How much does a Mount Titlis tour cost?
Guided coach days from Lucerne and Zurich run from $168 to $220 per person, with the cable car in the fare. Private days run from $418 to $925 per person, falling as your group grows. The cableway's own return ticket from Engelberg is $137, with no transport and no guide.
How much is the Titlis cable car ticket?
The return from Engelberg to the summit costs CHF 102 for an adult and CHF 51 for a child aged 6 to 15 in summer 2026, at the cableway's own prices. Engelberg to Trübsee alone is CHF 27 one way.
How long do you get at the summit on a tour?
It depends on the operator. Best of Switzerland Tours limit summit visits to about an hour in 2026 while the new summit station is built, then take groups down to Trübsee to eat. Other coach days plan 2 to 2.5 hours on the mountain, and the cableway's own ticket has no limit before the last car down.
Is the Rotair running in 2026?
Not this autumn. The revolving Rotair is closed from 17 August to 11 December 2026, and the non-revolving TITLIS Connect carries you from Stand to the summit instead. Tours that name the Rotair use TITLIS Connect until it reopens.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the cable car?
The Swiss Travel Pass halves the cable car fare; it does not make it free. The Half Fare Card and the GA travelcard give the same 50% off. Only the Lucerne Travel Pass lets you ride the cableway free.
Which tours include the Ice Flyer?
The guided Zurich day and the Lucerne half day from Best of Switzerland Tours include it, as do Keytours' panoramic day from Zurich and the cableway's own ticket. Several other coach days sell it as an option, so check the fare you pick. In summer it runs from 09:15 to 16:00, weather permitting.
How do you get to Mount Titlis from Lucerne?
Take the train to Engelberg, then the cable car. The direct Luzern-Engelberg Express takes 43 minutes on a normal day, but in autumn 2026 part of the line runs as a replacement bus on many dates, so check the timetable for yours. The coach tours leave from the Landenberg coach park on Alpenquai.
How long is a Mount Titlis day trip from Zurich?
Coach days from Zurich take 8 to 11 hours, with a stop in Lucerne on the way. On your own, the train from Zurich main station to Engelberg takes about 1 hour 49 minutes with two changes.
Is there a private Mount Titlis tour?
Yes: private days by car from Zurich, and a private guided hike from Lucerne that stays below the summit. Private fares run from $418 to $925 per person. Check the fare line before you book, because one private day from Zurich leaves the cable car out of the price.
What should you wear at the top?
Pack for winter even in July: a warm windproof jacket, gloves and a hat, and closed shoes with grip for the icy paths. Sunglasses matter too, because the glare off the glacier is strong. You can peel the layers off again in the valley.
Is there snow on Titlis in summer?
Yes. The glacier at the top keeps snow all year, and snow tubing runs at the summit in the warm months. In a heatwave the snow thins and some activities close, as travellers found in August 2026.
Can children go up Titlis?
Yes. Children aged 6 to 15 pay half fare on the cableway, CHF 51 for the summer return. Operators warn that the altitude at 3,020 metres is not advised for infants, and the winter ski option on the Best of Switzerland days needs children to be at least 10.
Can you cancel a Mount Titlis tour?
Every tour we list refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. Weather is the usual reason: if the forecast shows cloud or storm on the summit, cancel in time and pick another day.
What time is the last cable car up?
The Engelberg-Titlis cableway runs from 08:30 to 17:00, and the last ride up from Engelberg leaves at 16:00. Hours change with the season, so check them for your date.
Is Mount Titlis worth it?
On a clear day, yes: the glacier, the Cliff Walk and a view far across the Alps. In 2026 part of the summit is a building site and the Rotair is closed until mid-December, so go with that in mind. Cloud can hide the view completely, which is why free cancellation matters.
How high is Mount Titlis?
The summit is 3,238 metres. The cable car stops at the summit station at 3,020 metres, which is where the terrace, the Cliff Walk and the Glacier Cave are.
What is the Titlis Cliff Walk?
A suspension bridge at about 3,041 metres, opened in December 2012 and billed as Europe's highest, across a drop of about 500 metres. It is free with the cable car ticket and closes in bad weather.
Is the Cliff Walk scary?
It is narrow, open to the wind and it sways a little, which is the point. Travellers often say it is less frightening than it looks. It closes when wind, ice or snow make it unsafe.
Is the Glacier Cave open?
Usually, and it is in the cable car ticket. In August 2026 travellers on several tours found it closed in the summer heat, so check on the day if it is the reason you are going.
What is TITLIS Horizon?
TITLIS Horizon is the observation deck in the new TITLIS Tower at the summit, open since 1 June 2026. The tour operators list it as an extra: CHF 18 for an adult and CHF 9 for a child, paid on the spot.
What is TITLIS Connect?
A non-revolving cable car from Stand to the summit station. It carries everyone up while the Rotair is closed, until 11 December 2026.
What is Trübsee?
A mountain lake and the middle station of the cableway, at about 1,800 metres. In 2026 many groups eat there on the way down, and in summer you can walk round the lake or paddle at its edge.
Where do you eat on Titlis in 2026?
While the summit station is rebuilt, Best of Switzerland Tours take their groups down to the Trübsee middle station, where the restaurants are. No tour includes lunch, so budget for it or bring a snack.
Does altitude affect people on Titlis?
At 3,020 metres some people feel short of breath or light-headed. Operators warn that the trip is not advised for infants or anyone with heart conditions. Move slowly at the top and drink water.
What is the weather like at the top?
Cold and windy in every month, and colder than the valley. Cloud can hide the view even when Engelberg is sunny, so check the summit forecast the day before.
When is the best time of day to go up?
Early. Travellers who took the first cable car found the summit quiet, and by late morning it was crowded. Arrive at the valley station before 08:30 if you are going on your own.
Do Mount Titlis tours pick up from hotels?
Only the private days do. Coach days meet at the Sihlquai bus station in Zurich or the Landenberg coach park on Alpenquai in Lucerne, and the small-group days by train meet inside the main stations.
Where do the Zurich coach tours leave from?
From the Sihlquai bus station beside Zurich main station. Best of Switzerland Tours use their counter at Limmatstrasse 2 and ask you to check in 15 minutes early; Gray Line use their counter on Ausstellungsstrasse.
Is there a tour from Basel?
Yes, a small-group day by public train with a local guide, about 9 hours, meeting at Basel SBB station. It pairs about 3 hours on Titlis with 2 hours in Lucerne. On your own, Basel to Engelberg by train takes about 1 hour 55 minutes.
Can you hike instead of riding to the top?
Yes: a private guided hike from Lucerne spends the day on trails below the Titlis north face, with a farm lunch stop and a monastery cheese maker. It never goes up to the summit station.
What happens if the cable car closes for wind?
Wind closes the cableway a few days a year. On the Keytours days, if the cable car is shut the cableway part may be refunded but the transport is not. On any tour, free cancellation 24 hours ahead is your best protection.
Can you ski on a Titlis tour?
Best of Switzerland Tours sell a winter Ski Experience option on their Titlis days, for beginners aged 10 and over. It is a taster, not a ski day.
Are Titlis tours wheelchair accessible?
The Best of Switzerland coach days say they are not suitable for wheelchair users. The small-group days by train from Zurich, Lucerne and Basel list wheelchair access. Ask the operator before you book.
Which languages do the guides speak?
Best of Switzerland Tours guide in English and Spanish. Keytours' driver-guides speak English, with Greek as well on the panoramic day from Zurich.
Can you skip the queue for the cable car?
No tour skips it. A prebooked ticket saves the ticket counter, not the line for the cable car itself, and at busy times travellers queued well over an hour. The first car at 08:30 is your best way round it.
Is there parking at the valley station?
Yes, at the Titlis valley station in Engelberg, for CHF 5 per car per day according to the cableway's own listing. Travellers who drove say you pay at a machine before you return to the car.
Should you choose Titlis or the Jungfraujoch?
Titlis is closer to Lucerne and Zurich and a shorter day, with a CHF 102 cable car return from Engelberg. The Jungfraujoch is higher, at 3,454 metres, and a longer trip from either city. Pick Titlis for snow play and the Cliff Walk in half a day.
How far ahead should you book?
In summer and over Christmas, a few days to a week ahead. Book with free cancellation, then decide on the forecast 24 hours before.
