About Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis rises to 3,238 metres above Engelberg, and its cable cars climb from the village to the summit station at 3,020 metres in about 30 minutes. Up there is the only glacier in Central Switzerland that visitors can reach, with the Cliff Walk suspension bridge over a 500-metre drop and a Glacier Cave 10 metres below the surface, in ice more than 5,000 years old. Things to Do on Titlis

The Cliff Walk and the cave cost nothing extra once you are at the summit station, and the Ice Flyer chairlift swings out over crevasses up to 20 metres deep. The TITLIS Tower, a former communication tower reworked by Herzog & de Meuron, adds a viewing deck above the glacier. On the way down, the middle station at Trübsee sits beside the lake of the same name.

Getting to Engelberg

Every way up starts at the valley station in Engelberg. In normal service a direct train reaches it from Lucerne in 43 minutes, and Zurich HB is 1 hour 43 away with one change; until 1 November 2026 a replacement bus covers part of the line. In Engelberg a free bus runs from the station to the valley stations.

Planning Your Visit

The cable cars run from 08:30 to 17:00, with the last ride up at 16:00, and the whole climb takes about 30 minutes. It is winter at the top all year, so bring a warm layer, gloves and sunglasses even in July. In 2026 the revolving Rotair is closed from 17 August to 11 December, and TITLIS Connect carries everyone up.

The Cliff WalkThe Cliff Walk is the highest suspension bridge in Europe: 100 metres across a 500-metre drop, opened in December 2012 and free to cross.

Every way up starts at the valley station in Engelberg. In normal service a direct train from Lucerne takes 43 minutes, and Zurich HB is 1 hour 43 away with one change. Until 1 November 2026 part of the line runs as a replacement bus, so allow extra time. In Engelberg a free bus links the station with the valley stations.

How to get there

The summer return from Engelberg to the summit costs CHF 102, and children aged 6 to 15 pay half. A Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card takes 50% off, and the Lucerne Travel Pass covers the ride in full. For Mount Titlis booking, the cableway sells its ticket online as well as at the counter, and every Mount Titlis reservation on a tour here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead. Compare the fares

The cable cars run from 08:30 to 17:00, with the last ride up at 16:00 and the last down at 17:00. From 17 August to 11 December 2026 the revolving Rotair is closed, and TITLIS Connect carries everyone to the summit instead. The Ice Flyer's summer season runs to 31 October.

Do You Need a Tour to Reach Mount Titlis?

Not to ride up. The cableway sells its own return at the valley station in Engelberg and online, and the same return with the Ice Flyer can be booked ahead from $137. Trains reach Engelberg from Lucerne and Zurich, and a pass halves the cable car fare but does not make it free.

A tour earns its fare in three places: the coach or train from Zurich, Lucerne or Basel with every connection planned, a guide who rides up with you, and a day that runs to a fixed time. If you are already in Engelberg, or happy to follow the trains yourself, the cableway's ticket does the job.

How much does a Mount Titlis tour cost?

Guided coach days from Lucerne and Zurich run from $168 to $220 per person, with the cable car in the fare. Private days run from $418 to $925 per person, falling as your group grows. The cableway's own return ticket from Engelberg is $137, with no transport and no guide.

How much is the Titlis cable car ticket?

The return from Engelberg to the summit costs CHF 102 for an adult and CHF 51 for a child aged 6 to 15 in summer 2026, at the cableway's own prices. Engelberg to Trübsee alone is CHF 27 one way.

How long do you get at the summit on a tour?

It depends on the operator. Best of Switzerland Tours limit summit visits to about an hour in 2026 while the new summit station is built, then take groups down to Trübsee to eat. Other coach days plan 2 to 2.5 hours on the mountain, and the cableway's own ticket has no limit before the last car down.

Is the Rotair running in 2026?

Not this autumn. The revolving Rotair is closed from 17 August to 11 December 2026, and the non-revolving TITLIS Connect carries you from Stand to the summit instead. Tours that name the Rotair use TITLIS Connect until it reopens.

Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the cable car?

The Swiss Travel Pass halves the cable car fare; it does not make it free. The Half Fare Card and the GA travelcard give the same 50% off. Only the Lucerne Travel Pass lets you ride the cableway free.

Which tours include the Ice Flyer?

The guided Zurich day and the Lucerne half day from Best of Switzerland Tours include it, as do Keytours' panoramic day from Zurich and the cableway's own ticket. Several other coach days sell it as an option, so check the fare you pick. In summer it runs from 09:15 to 16:00, weather permitting.

How do you get to Mount Titlis from Lucerne?

Take the train to Engelberg, then the cable car. The direct Luzern-Engelberg Express takes 43 minutes on a normal day, but in autumn 2026 part of the line runs as a replacement bus on many dates, so check the timetable for yours. The coach tours leave from the Landenberg coach park on Alpenquai.

How long is a Mount Titlis day trip from Zurich?

Coach days from Zurich take 8 to 11 hours, with a stop in Lucerne on the way. On your own, the train from Zurich main station to Engelberg takes about 1 hour 49 minutes with two changes.

Is there a private Mount Titlis tour?

Yes: private days by car from Zurich, and a private guided hike from Lucerne that stays below the summit. Private fares run from $418 to $925 per person. Check the fare line before you book, because one private day from Zurich leaves the cable car out of the price.

What should you wear at the top?

Pack for winter even in July: a warm windproof jacket, gloves and a hat, and closed shoes with grip for the icy paths. Sunglasses matter too, because the glare off the glacier is strong. You can peel the layers off again in the valley.

Is there snow on Titlis in summer?

Yes. The glacier at the top keeps snow all year, and snow tubing runs at the summit in the warm months. In a heatwave the snow thins and some activities close, as travellers found in August 2026.

Can children go up Titlis?

Yes. Children aged 6 to 15 pay half fare on the cableway, CHF 51 for the summer return. Operators warn that the altitude at 3,020 metres is not advised for infants, and the winter ski option on the Best of Switzerland days needs children to be at least 10.

Can you cancel a Mount Titlis tour?

Every tour we list refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. Weather is the usual reason: if the forecast shows cloud or storm on the summit, cancel in time and pick another day.

What time is the last cable car up?

The Engelberg-Titlis cableway runs from 08:30 to 17:00, and the last ride up from Engelberg leaves at 16:00. Hours change with the season, so check them for your date.

Is Mount Titlis worth it?

On a clear day, yes: the glacier, the Cliff Walk and a view far across the Alps. In 2026 part of the summit is a building site and the Rotair is closed until mid-December, so go with that in mind. Cloud can hide the view completely, which is why free cancellation matters.
