Check availabilityIt is a full day out of the city with the mountain paid for. You leave Zurich in the morning by coach, train or private car. You stop in Lucerne, either on the way or on the way back. Then you drive on to Engelberg, ride the cable cars up to the summit station at 3,020 metres, and come back to Zurich in the evening.
Every day here pairs the mountain with Lucerne. What changes from one day to the next is how the time is split. You might get two and a half hours in Lucerne and two and a half on the mountain, or four hours at the top and a short walk past the Lion Monument.
On your own you change trains at Lucerne, then take the free bus from Engelberg station to the valley station. Until 1 November 2026 you also change to a replacement bus for part of the line. On a tour you step off at the valley station.
On almost every day here the cable car return is paid. You still queue for the cabins with everyone else, but you skip the ticket counter, where the queue can be longest.
Lucerne sits on the way. A tour gives you the Old Town and the lakefront without a second trip, and some days add a guided walk.
The private days collect you from your hotel or the airport. You set the pace, and on the Mercedes day you get about four hours on the mountain.

The train wins if you hold a Swiss Travel Pass or a Half Fare Card, both of which halve the cable car, and like planning your own day.
