The cave sits about 10 metres below the surface of the glacier. The ice around you is over 5,000 years old, and it is lit from within, so the walls glow blue. Its entrance is inside the summit station, which makes it the one sight at the top you can reach without going outside.
You step out of the lift into a narrow tunnel of ice. The walls and the roof are the glacier itself, and the lighting turns them deep blue. It is quiet and cold, and the floor can be wet under your feet.
A handrail runs along the wall. You come back up the same way, into the station, with the terrace and the Cliff Walk a few steps away. Give yourself 15 to 20 minutes, more if you stop for photos.
Is it open?
Check on the day. In August 2026 travellers on several tours found the Glacier Cave closed during the summer heat, some of them for weeks. Before you queue, ask at the valley station counter, or ask your guide, whether it is open. If it is shut, the Cliff Walk and the snowfield are right outside the station.
A heatwave softens the ice, and that is when the cave closes. Autumn and winter are the safer months if the cave is the reason you are going. Month-by-month conditions are on the weather page.
Slippery floors and cold hands
The cave is below freezing all year, and the floor can be wet ice. Before you go down:
- Wear closed shoes with a good grip. Sandals and smooth soles slide.
- Keep your gloves on and hold the handrail.
- Put a warm layer on before you leave the station.
- Hold small children's hands, and carry a baby rather than using a pushchair.
