Visiting Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis rises above Engelberg in central Switzerland, and a chain of cable cars takes you from the village to a summit station at 3,020 metres, on the edge of a glacier. Before you choose a Mount Titlis day tour, three things decide your day: how long you get at the top, whether the cable car is in your fare, and who is with you up there.

The ride up, station by station

Every way up starts at the valley station in Engelberg. From Lucerne the Luzern-Engelberg Express takes 43 minutes on a normal day; the coach tours drive you to the station door. From there you change once, at Stand, on the way to the glacier:

1. Ride the TITLIS Xpress gondola from the valley station up to Trübsee, the lake and middle station.
2. Stay in the same gondola line to Stand, at 2,450 metres.
3. Change at Stand for the last lift to the summit station at 3,020 metres. Normally that is the Rotair, the round cabin that turns a full circle as it climbs.
4. Walk out onto the terrace, the Cliff Walk and the glacier, then come down the same way.

What 2026 changes

• Best of Switzerland Tours now limit summit visits to about an hour and take their groups down to Trübsee to eat.
• Other coach days still plan 2 to 2.5 hours on the mountain.
• In August 2026 travellers found the Glacier Cave shut on several days in the heat.
• The new observation deck in the tower costs extra, paid on the spot.

None of this stops a good day, but it changes which fare suits you. If summit time matters most, the cableway's own ticket has no limit before the last car down.

How long to allow

Give yourself at least three hours on the mountain if you go alone, and a full day from Zurich. Here is how much time each way of going gives you on Titlis itself:

What to wear at 3,020 metres

It is winter at the top in every month. The paths are packed snow and ice, the wind cuts across the Cliff Walk, and there is little shelter on the glacier. Travellers who went up in summer clothes regretted it, and one in May put the wind chill at minus 15. Pack for it even on a warm morning in Lucerne:

• A warm, windproof jacket, with gloves and a hat.
• Closed shoes with grip: the Glacier Cave floor and the paths are slippery.
• Sunglasses and sun cream, because the glare off the snow is strong.
• Layers you can take off again in the valley.
• Water and a snack for a long coach day.

Eating on the mountain

No tour includes lunch, so plan for it. While the summit station is rebuilt, Best of Switzerland Tours take their groups down to Trübsee, where the restaurants are, and eat on the way back. If you go on your own ticket, you can stop at Trübsee too: in summer there is a walk round the lake and a playground. Bring a snack for the queue at busy times.

When the weather shuts the top

The mountain makes its own weather. Wind closes the cableway a few days a year, cloud can hide every view from the terrace, and ice or storm closes the Cliff Walk and the chairlift. Travellers who went up in cloud still enjoyed the snow, but the ones who came for the view say the day depends on it.
