A day on Mount Titlis works best when it starts early. The first cable car leaves Engelberg at 08:30, the summit is quietest in the first hour, and everything you want to do up there fits into a morning. This guide sets out the day hour by hour from Lucerne, Zurich and Basel, whether you go on your own or on a Mount Titlis day tour. It covers the order to see the summit in, where to eat in a building year, and what to add on the way down.

What does a Titlis day look like hour by hour?

The shape is the same from any city. You take the train to Engelberg, then the free bus or a short walk to the valley station. The cable cars take about 30 minutes to the summit station at 3,020 metres. You spend three or four hours at the top, come down with a stop at Trübsee if you like, and take the train home.

Here are sample days on a normal timetable, using the Tuesday 10 November 2026 trains. Swiss trains run on the same minutes past the hour all day, so the pattern repeats on most dates.

Until 1 November 2026, part of the line to Engelberg runs as a replacement bus. That adds up to six minutes from Lucerne and one extra change. Check your own date in the SBB timetable before you set an alarm.

How do you do it from Lucerne?

Lucerne is the easy start. The direct Luzern-Engelberg Express takes 43 minutes, so the 07:10 train has you in Engelberg at 07:53. From the station, the free bus takes you to the valley station, and you are in the queue before the first cabin at 08:30.

How do you do it from Zurich?

The 07:10 from Zurich HB reaches Engelberg at 08:53 with one change at Lucerne. You will reach the summit around 09:45, which is still early enough to beat the late-morning crowd on a weekday.

A Zurich coach day adds a Lucerne stop and takes 9 to 11 hours. That is a good trade if you want both places. If you only want the mountain, the train is quicker. The Mount Titlis and Lucerne day tour from Zurich options set out how each day splits its time.

How do you do it from Basel?

The 07:04 from Basel SBB reaches Engelberg at 08:53, the same arrival as from Zurich, with one change. The return at 16:02 has you back in Basel at 17:55.

There is one guided option from Basel: a small-group day by train with a local guide, meeting in the station hall. It gives you two hours in Lucerne and about three on the mountain, in 9 hours.

In what order should you see the summit?

Go outside first, while the weather is best and the paths are quiet. A short walk across the secured glacier takes you from the top station to the Cliff Walk, about 100 metres of bridge over a 500 metre drop. Allow about 20 minutes.

Next, the Ice Flyer. From 09:15 in summer it carries you over crevasses to the Glacier Park, where you can slide down the snow on a tube and ride a conveyor belt back up. An hour covers both.

Save the indoor sights for later, or for when cloud rolls in. The Glacier Cave lies 10 metres below the glacier surface and is reached by a lift inside the station. The new TITLIS Tower, opened in 2026, has the Horizon Deck and a restaurant.

The cave may be shut. In August 2026 visitors on several tours found the Glacier Cave closed in the heat. If it matters to you, check before you go, or plan on the Cliff Walk as the highlight instead.

The Horizon deck price is the tour operators' figure, paid on the spot. With everything in the table and a few queues, three to four hours at the top is a comfortable day.

Where do you eat on Titlis now?

At the top, the new TITLIS Tower has Joseph's Restaurant. While the rest of the summit station is rebuilt, Best of Switzerland Tours take their groups down to the Trübsee middle station to eat instead, because that is where the restaurants are this year.

No tour includes lunch. On the small-group days you can buy it by card at the top. If you are on a tight budget, carry a snack and eat at Trübsee on the way down.

Should you add Trübsee on the way down?

Yes, if you have an hour. The middle station sits beside a mountain lake at about 1,800 metres. In summer you can row on the lake, and children have Schmuggli's adventure playground and free trampolines. The Trübsee lifts run until 17:15, later than the summit.

Can you fit in Engelberg too?

You can, and the abbey is the reason to. Engelberg Abbey runs a public tour on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 16:00, meeting at the gate. It lasts about an hour and costs CHF 12 for an adult. The exhibition room is closed from 21 September to 31 October 2026.

What if the weather turns?

At 3,020 metres the weather changes fast. Wind closes the cableway a few days a year, and the Cliff Walk shuts when wind, ice or snow make it unsafe. Cloud can hide the view even when Engelberg is sunny.

  • Check the summit forecast the evening before, not the valley one.
  • Book with free cancellation and decide 24 hours ahead.
  • If cloud comes in while you are up, head for the Glacier Cave and the tower.
  • If the top is closed, Trübsee may still be running, and the lake is worth the ride.

How is a winter day different?

Winter changes what you do rather than when you go. At the summit it is winter all year: MeteoSwiss measures a mean of −9.6 °C there in January. The Ice Flyer's summer season ends on 31 October, and in 2026 the Rotair stays closed until 11 December.

At Trübsee, the snow park at Berghotel Trübsee has tubes and sledges with a covered magic carpet. The sledging track runs from Christmas to early March, and there are two snowshoe trails on the lower slopes. Dates change year to year, so check the seasonal schedule for yours.
