Mount Titlis is one of the easiest glaciers in the Alps to reach with children. The cable cars do the climbing, there is snow to play in all summer, and the lake at the middle station has a playground. The questions are the altitude, the cold and the fares. This guide answers them, and picks the tours that suit a family.

Is Titlis good for children?

For most families, yes. Snow in July is a thrill for a child who has never seen it, and the Glacier Park at the summit lets them slide down on a tube and ride a conveyor belt back up. The Ice Flyer chairlift carries you over the crevasses, and the Cliff Walk is an adventure they will talk about.

A family group aged 12 to 75 on a small-group day in 2021 said everyone was looked after. On the self-guided Keytours days, one father of a young family in August 2026 wanted more time to work through the map. So the pace matters as much as the place.

What do children pay?

On the cableway's own fares, children aged 6 to 15 pay half. The summer return from Engelberg is CHF 51 for a child against CHF 102 for an adult. Children under 6 ride free, and so do children with a Swiss Junior Card.

The Ice Flyer is the exception: it costs CHF 12 for everyone and no card reduces it. On a tour, the fare you see first is usually the adult price. Enter your children's ages on the booking page to see yours.

Is the altitude safe for babies?

The summit station is at 3,020 metres, and the cable cars get you there in about 30 minutes. That is a fast climb. Keytours say infants can join the summit, but recommend precautions against altitude sickness. Other operators list the trip as unsuitable for people with heart problems.

If you are unsure about a baby or a toddler, ask your doctor before you go, keep the visit short, and come down if your child seems unwell. The lake at Trübsee, at about 1,800 metres, is a gentler alternative.

Where can kids play in the snow?

In summer, at the top. The Glacier Park has snow tubes and a conveyor belt, and the Ice Flyer takes you there over the crevasses. It closes when the snow runs thin: in the August 2026 heat, visitors found the tubing shut on several days.

In winter, at Trübsee. The snow park at Berghotel Trübsee has tubes and sledges and a covered magic carpet back up. The sledging track runs from Christmas to early March. Older children, from 12, can drive the electric snowmobiles in the SnowXpark near the Trübsee station.

Check before you promise the snow. The Glacier Park and the tubing close in heat and storms, and some lifts close for maintenance between seasons. Look at the seasonal schedule for your date, and keep Trübsee in mind as the backup.

Best of Switzerland Tours sell a winter Ski Experience option for first-timers aged 10 and over, who must be with an adult. It is a taster with no lesson and no access to the other slopes.

What is there for children at Trübsee?

A lot, and most of it free in summer. Schmuggli's adventure playground sits by the lake, and the BagJump tower, trampolines, a bike pump track and a slackline can be tried for free in the summer season. You can row on the lake, and Schmuggli's Sbrinz riddle trail, a 1.5-hour walk down to the cheese dairy at Untertrübsee, is being set up.

One visitor on the cableway's own ticket in July 2026 ended the day there with paddling, the playground and a walk round the lake. Trübsee is also a good fallback if the summit closes for wind.

Can children cross the Cliff Walk?

Yes. The bridge is about 100 metres long over a 500 metre drop, and it sways a little in the wind. A visitor in January 2026 found it less scary than it looks. Reaching it takes a short walk across the secured glacier from the top station.

It closes in wind, ice or snow. Hold small children's hands, and keep their gloves on. More on the bridge is on the Cliff Walk page.

Can you take a stroller up?

Several tours are marked stroller accessible: the small-group days from Lucerne, Zurich and Basel, and the Best of Switzerland afternoon fare from Lucerne. At the summit, though, the paths across the glacier are icy and uneven.

A baby carrier is easier outside, on the walk to the bridge and in the snow. If your child is small enough, bring one as well as the stroller.

Which tours suit families?

Look for a short day, time at the top, and snow play in the fare. Here are the options that fit, with what each one offers a family.

The Keytours half day from Lucerne is the best all-round pick: six hours, about two and a half on the mountain, and snow tubing paid. For babies and toddlers, the private Mercedes day from Zurich offers infant seats and pickup at your door, and costs $925 a person at the group size shown. For older children who want hours on the snow, take the cableway's own ticket at $137 and stay as long as they last.

Summer or winter: which is better with children?

Summer, for most families. From May to October the Glacier Park at the summit has snow tubing, the Ice Flyer runs until 31 October, and Trübsee has its playground, trampolines and rowing boats. You get snow at the top and a green lake halfway down, on the same ticket.

Winter moves the fun down the mountain. The snow park at Berghotel Trübsee has tubes and sledges with a covered magic carpet, and the sledging track runs from Christmas to early March. Children from 10 can try the Ski Experience on a Best of Switzerland day, and from 12 the electric snowmobiles. At the top it is far colder: MeteoSwiss measures a January mean of −9.6 °C there. In 2026 the Rotair reopens on 11 December.

How do you keep children warm?

Dress them for winter, whatever the month. MeteoSwiss's Titlis station records a mean of 3.5 °C in July, against a daily high of about 21 °C down in Engelberg. The wind makes it feel colder: a visitor in May 2026 said the wind chill felt like minus 15.

What about food on the day?

No tour includes lunch. At the top, the new tower has Joseph's Restaurant, and while the summit station is rebuilt the main restaurants are at Trübsee.

Carry snacks and water. Children get hungry in the cold, and a queue for the cable car can be long at busy times.
