The short answer. Yes, there is snow at the top of Mount Titlis in July and August. The summit station sits at 3,020 metres on a glacier, and the summer mean up there is only about 3.5 °C. You can walk on snow, ride the Ice Flyer over the crevasses and slide down on a tube in the Glacier Park. In a heatwave the snow thins and some things can close, such as the Glacier Cave.

It is 21 °C in Engelberg on an average July afternoon. Half an hour later, at the summit station, you step out onto snow. That contrast is why people come in summer, and it works: TITLIS is the only glacier in Central Switzerland that you can walk onto. The cableway puts it in one line: up at the peak there is only one season, winter. Here is what you will find, month by month, and what a hot summer changes.

Why the snow stays

The summit station is 3,020 metres up, well above the snow line, on the Titlis Glacier. MeteoSwiss runs a weather station at the summit. Its averages for 1996 to 2025 put July's mean at 3.5 °C and August's at 3.6 °C, the two warmest months of the year. Even the warmest reading of an average July month is only about 13.3 °C.

So the glacier keeps its white cover through the summer, and fresh snow can fall at the top when it rains in the valley. It is not the deep powder of winter, but it is snow underfoot.

What you can do on the snow in summer

  • The Glacier Park. Sledging in summer: you slide down on a tube, and a conveyor belt carries you back to the start. The tours put the tubing season at the summit from May to about August, weather permitting.
  • The Ice Flyer. A six-seat chairlift from the summit station over crevasses up to 20 metres deep, down to the Glacier Park. Its summer season runs from 4 May to 31 October 2026, from 09:15 to 16:00, and it costs CHF 12 at the counter.
  • The Cliff Walk. 100 metres of suspension bridge over a 500-metre drop, free with your ticket. You reach it on a short, secured walk across the glacier from the station. See the Cliff Walk page for when wind closes it.
  • The Glacier Cave. A path 10 metres under the glacier surface, through ice more than 5,000 years old, reached by a lift inside the station.

In winter the snow play moves down the mountain. From December to April the tubes run at Trübsee, the middle station, beside the frozen lake.

What a hot summer changes

Summer 2026 showed the limits. In the August heat, visitors on several days found the Glacier Cave shut and little fresh snow on top, and some found the tubing closed too. In mid-September one visitor found a snow machine working beside the icy path. None of this closes the mountain. It changes what is open on the day.

Important. The Glacier Cave can close in a heatwave, and nobody can promise it weeks ahead. Check its status on the morning you go, and read the Glacier Cave page for what to do if it is shut.

The longer trend runs the same way. Wikipedia's article on Titlis notes that the glacier has shrunk sharply and is expected to disappear in about twenty years. For now it still gives you snow underfoot in August, and for many visitors that is reason enough to go.

When to go for the best summer snow

Early summer, after the winter's snow, usually leaves the most on top, with the Glacier Park and the Ice Flyer both running. August is the warmest month and the most likely to bring heat closures. September is cooler, quieter and often clear, though by then the snow is at its thinnest before the autumn falls.

  • Go early in the day. The snow is firmer in the morning, and the cable cars start at 08:30.
  • Watch the forecast, not the calendar. A cool, wet week in the valley can mean fresh snow at the top.
  • Keep an indoor plan. If cloud sits on the summit, the cave and the station are still there.

A summer morning on the snow, hour by hour

On your own ticket, this order gets the most out of the snow before the day warms up:

  1. 08:30, Engelberg. Take one of the first cable cars; the ride to the top takes about half an hour.
  2. 09:15, the Ice Flyer. The chairlift opens for the day. Ride it to the Glacier Park and take the tubes while the queue is short.
  3. Mid-morning, the Cliff Walk. Cross the bridge before the afternoon cloud builds.
  4. Late morning, the cave. If it is open, the lift inside the station takes you down into the ice.
  5. Lunch, Trübsee. Ride down to the middle station and eat by the lake.

The last ride up leaves Engelberg at 16:00, and the Ice Flyer stops at the same time, so an afternoon start leaves you little time on the snow.
